The Evolving Fashion of Cummerbunds: Past, Present, and Future

As formalwear trends continue to evolve, the classic cummerbund finds itself at a crossroads. This traditional accessory, once a staple of black-tie attire, seems to be experiencing a notable decline in popularity, leading many to question whether cummerbunds are still considered fashionable.

The cummerbund, a broad waistband that is worn with a tuxedo, has been a long-standing feature in men’s formal fashion. According to Brent Reece, Store Director at Oak Hall, this piece not only contributes to a neater profile but also serves a practical purpose by hiding excess fabric where the shirt tucks into the trousers. “A cummerbund will tie together a look that’s clean, classic, and never out of style,” emphasizes Reece.

However, recent observations indicate that cummerbunds are becoming increasingly rare at black-tie events, leading to a shift in the landscape of formal dressing. While it remains true that classic tuxes will never entirely fall out of favor, the adoption of modern styles poses challenges to the cummerbund’s prominence.

This trend is not isolated to men in their thirties; younger generations are also embracing a cummerbund-free look. For instance, eighteen-year-old Sam Staggs expressed a distaste for such accessories when preparing for prom, citing that both he and his peers prefer the simplicity of a tuxedo without a cummerbund.
